Heading down the rabbit hole through Sao Paulo's south side near Congonhas airport will get you to this Alice in Wonderland getaway, with grand stone steps leading visitors into the enchanted forest. Park gives insight into what the city was like before smog and bulldozers moved in. Thick rainforest hides winding trails; two old greenhouses in the Jardim de Lineu, which were inspired by their Swedish counterparts in Uppsala; long lakes; and animals including monkeys, sloths, toucans, herons and parrots. Entrance leads to raised boardwalk lined with enormous palms that run parallel to a small, flowing stream. Those hungry after all that walking can find paradise in per kilo restaurant and eat under a wooden pergola. To achieve a sense of true tranquility, come during weekdays.
