Low-key, super no-frills historic drinking den once bringing together bohemians, politicians, musicians and journalists—rumor has it Fidel Castro got his drink on at this once left-leaning hub, though we don’t know if he tried its famous dry martini—re-opens in same digs after closing alongside downturn of city center two decades ago. Owner used photos of the 40 years of the original bar to help bring back original references of the triangle-shaped space's rousing glory days, such as the illuminated counter and wooden stools with armrests to get patrons on first-name basis with barman like it they had been before here, restored Italian marble façade, and its famous sidewalk seating, all of which makes it a prime recruitment spot (for a drink, like wasabi and sake Kasato Maru, of course). Italian dishes including cassava gnocchi and bar snack food like sausage-stuffed croquettes called Nick Bar and provolone chips—inspired by city’s central market—feeds brain cells, while music including blues and live chorinho beginning Thursdays feed the soul. Classic feijoada is served Saturdays.
