Secluded in a residential back haunt of Praca de Árvore some 20 minutes from the center rests this quaint but by no means small Hostelling International hostel. Brought to you by the same owner behind Hostel dos Frances in Bela Vista, this hostel embodies a similiar atmosphere: tranquil, spacious and aimed at a crowd from all over. However, the original decor of this converted house has been largely left untouched, so guests are left beguiled by the quirky '60s/'70s retro tiles that cover the walls and floors. Rooms are divided by sex, so girls won't have to endure the early morning waft of testosterone. Request the dorm with the walk-in wardrobe, which acts as a locker area with adjoining veranda. For those looking for a little privacy, a few single rooms come with double beds and a family room has bunk beds. Padlocks are included. Breakfast, served between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., is a highlight: Expect all the traditional Brazilian trimmings, such as cake, fruit, cookies and ham and cheese. The meal is consumed in what was originally the garden, now enclosed but still maintaining an outdoors feel. Guests can chill next to the fountain or in a hammock next to a small sprawl of plants while watching fellow guests show off their skills on the free pool table. Large, clean kitchen is available to guests, an amenity we like in hostels. Photos: Crispin Cairns
