In the heart of Vila Madalena lies the animated, cozy and friendly Casa Club hostel and bar, run by a trio of thirtysomething former University of Sao Paulo biology students, and in primo digs among boutiques, watering holes and artists' studios. Sleeping quarters consist of 16 or eight-person mixed-sex or ladies-only rooms, with backpack-size lockers under or beside beds that come with complimentary padlocks. Front desk area doubles as bar in the evening, and for good reason: Hostel activity centers around here and covered patio, which act as breakfast and hangout areas during the day. Quiet nights are rare on Fridays through Sundays—staff schedules entertainment to keep patrons close to their weekend crash pad. Bar is open to the public Wednesday to Sunday from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m., and pulls in an amicable, vibrant local crowd that loves to flex their English skills with foreigners (and apparently like to hang out at hostels). Hostel clients can escape the pressure of impromptu lessons to the back, complete with computers and kitchen. All that's missing is a pool, but rooftop sun-lounging area is halfway there.
