Smack-dab in Vila Madalena, this open-air hostel (look for it by its bright, colorful exterior) maintains its student spirit from its first days, when they owners were still in college. But just as they've grown up, so has the hostel, rapidly morphing into a place not only to stay, but to hang with new and old amigos as well. The huge highlight is the wooden patio at the front. Guests can order beer and caipirinhas — and even pizza — for super fair prices at the bar, which is decorated with woven hanging lamps. The food menu and specials are written in chalk on the wall, and happy hour helps heat things up daily. Comfort is still a requisite. Rooms' doors lead directly to the outside, which means quick in and out. Sleeping quarters are mixed-sex, in assorted combination of bunk beds and single beds (though there is a private room with a double bed). Each bed has its own locker and key and sheets, but pack a towel. Amenities are plenty: free WiFi and maps, a kitchen open to guest use, live bands who play on the rooftop of the bar, currency exchange, and, that's right, an inflatable pool when the weather gets warm.
