Located in the middle of "Gay" Caneca, this clean, multi-storied shopping mall became a bastion of the gay community when a hundred gay couples flocked to it in 2003 and staged a kiss-in after a security guard put the brakes on two guys who were openly swallowing each other's tongues inside Shopping Frei Caneca. Since then it's been a vehemently gay-friendly place, with some shops catering especially to the homosexual segment. The mall serves as a place to see and be seen, with muscled guys checking each other out over juice and fast food in the food court or inside the underwear shops. The Frei Caneca Unibanco Arteplex movie theater frequently makes the best-of critics' lists. Straights will similarly find everything they need here, from a pharmacy to bookstore and national chain stores such as Ellus and Arezzo.
