A high point in Sao Paulo's architectural history, the state-protected Edificio Italia measures a mighty 492 feet tall. The name gives away its origins: It pays homage to the financial and social success of the Italian immigrants who went from poor coffee plantation workers to established, moneyed business owners. It's the second-tallest building in Brazil (the winner, Mirante do Vale, located next to the Santa Ifigênia bridge, doesn't allow visitors). Between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays, take the breathless journey via elevator to the top and witness the stunning panoramic views of the city, free of charge. It's truly the place to appreciate enormous Sao Paulo. Outside of this time, you'll be hit with a R$15 viewing fee.
The top floor houses Terraço Italia, a chi-chi restaurant and bar with 360-degree views of the city, a live pianist and a wine cellar that will make your wallet weep.
