The handiwork of this georgic bar’s founder-slash-carpenter Wilhelm Heying still lives on past his death, who originally opened the drinking spot for fellow German immigrants smack in the middle of a neighborhood well associated with descendants from that country. He fashioned the shelves from wood from watermills; the lamps, from coffee mills; even the chairs and tables were made in his woodwork shop. Decades of life have now yellowed the German beer coasters on the wall, added dust to a collection of empty cans above the counter and worn the furniture to smooth, rounded corners. His sons are carrying on the tradition, keeping Warsteiner and Eisenbahn bier in stock for a mature local crowd appreciating them alongside the house’s German fare like pork knuckles.
