An open expanse, this former refuse dump's been transformed into a manicured haven of nature and concrete for fitness and leisure freaks. Work up a sweat at the basketball courts, soccer pitches or tennis courts; or take the kiddies to the play area, with sandpits and wooden apparatuses. For those aching for the escape-from the-city vibe, head for the glades area interlaced with mini paths and picnic areas, but don't think you can help yourself to the community herb garden tucked away nearby for your burgers.

Five reais to R$30 will rent you a myriad of two- to eight-wheeled objects: rollerskates, skateboards, BMXes, low-rider chopper bikes and even four-wheeled, four-seater family carts. Go for a cruise around several kilometers of snaking concrete paths through the glades, dodging yapping dogs and work-out enthusiasts. Photo: Crispin R Cairns
